This is a great entry level position within a museum. The successful candidate will gain experience working with a small team allowing for a broad range of experiences. The West Parry Sound District Museum is located in a rural environment within a heritage garden and next to a tourist attraction. The West Parry Sound District Museum recently installed a new permanent exhibition that will be opening to the public for the first time this fall.

This position is broken down into two components, customer service and the development of a docent program.

Responsibilities include:

Customer Service Duties:

  • Conducting gift shop and admission sales,
  • Interacting with visitors,
  • Answering phones,
  • Balancing the till,
  • Light housekeeping duties.

Docent Program:

  • Development of procedures and educational materials,
  • Recruitment of potential docents,
  • Creation of marketing materials to advertise tours,
  • Training docents, and training a select number of docents to train future docents,
  • Liaising with volunteers and staff to work out any kinks in the program, 
  • Creation of a report that will make recommendations regarding the future of the program.

This position is funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program, and all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria. An individual may be eligible for an internship if they: 

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
  • are unemployed or underemployed;
  • are a college or university graduate; and
  • are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program.

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.
