About Us

After years of interest in the creation of a local history museum, our journey officially began with the Museum's incorporation in November 1984. While fundraising for a permanent building, the museum was temporarily housed in the Parry Sound Fire Hall (now Parry Sound Bikes). It would be almost a decade of dedication before the Museum opened its permanent location at 17 George St on July 3rd, 1993.

Since the start, we've been dedicated to preserving the vibrant history of the West Parry Sound District, and we invite you to join us today as we celebrate the power of museums to inspire, educate, and connect communities worldwide.

The West Parry Sound District Museum, commonly known as the Museum on Tower Hill, began as a group of dedicated citizens who wanted to ensure the rich history of the district be preserved and interpreted for generations to come.

Today, the Museum continues its mission to collect, preserve, and share the history of the West Parry Sound District with visitors and future generations.

The Museum has three galleries for visitors to explore.

The E. Roy Smith Gallery is a long-term exhibit gallery. With a focus on local industries, the gallery has displays on logging, trapping, shipping and it houses an HO model of the Ottawa, Arnprior & Parry Sound Railway that takes visitors back in time and allows them to explore some of the transformative events and people that helped shape our district.

Our Founder's Room Gallery changes on a yearly basis and our Lion's Room Gallery is constantly changing every 4-6 months to showcase brand new exhibitions. So, there is always something new to see!

Located in the core of the Georgian Bay Biosphere, the West Parry Sound District Museum is situated within the Tower Hill Heritage Garden and mere steps away from Parry Sound's Lookout Tower, which gives a 360-degree view of the town and Parry Sound's harbour. There's no better family destination to explore in the area than Tower Hill.
